Hello and welcome Spirit friends! I am here after all today as we have dinner plans later (: I hope you are doing safe and well wherever you are reading today. This time around, I’m sharing a brief little overview of the book and text A Course in Miracles. Have you heard of this enormous book published in 1976 by Helen Schucman? Well, if you haven’t I’ll give you some guidelines…. I have not read it in its entirety but have seen many quotes and concepts presented by others in various workshops. Gabby Bernstein, Marianne Williamson, and Alan Cohen all have referenced this text many times in their own works and it is extremely powerful. I recently encountered a woman at a Meditation event that HAS read it ALL! It is something to digest slowly and perhaps even take breaks from because of its overwhelming material.
I also met another woman a few years back who was selling books regarding ACIM that a friend of hers wrote a while ago. That lady interpreted the text in her own way and got a book published. Denise met her and then became fascinated with its contents. The older woman had retired from work so she asked her younger friend to continue what she began. Denise said yes without even thinking too much about it. She became a vendor at some events and presented a few workshops as well on ACIM. I saw her a few times but then not so much anymore…I wonder if she is still advocating on behalf of her retired friend? She was passionate but also very timid with the whole process. I hope in some way she is still moving forward with the teachings however it suits them both.
One of the ever more popular sayings about the book is: ” Choose Love Over Fear.” That’s what we all should be doing anyway. One of these days I will find it and really try to delve into all Helen presents. It is over 1,000 pages so is recommended to read in small increments and really, you don’t want to rush through something of this magnitude. Helen claims the words were spoken to her through Jesus and then interpreted further with the help of her associate Bill Thetford. She isn’t officially listed as its author since it is “transcribed.” It basically is a way to spiritual transformation and inner peace with a text for teachers, students, and term explanations. There are shorter versions available if the larger one becomes too intimidating. It also can be religious at times so keep that in mind if you are possibly not into those ideas. Just remember despite its lengthy text and controversial nature, it’s all about changing your mindset from FEAR to LOVE. Get rid of the lack and embrace all that the Universe can and will give us. The other main messages are that we are all ONE and compassion and forgiveness are needed. This belief is well known throughout the Eastern cultures and traditions since Buddhism teaches these main virtues as well.
The book itself has been praised, criticized, and used as a learning tool since its inception. Back in the 1970’s, “new age” thinking was rarely heard of but blasphemed until we saw the likes of the late Dr. Wayne W. Dyer who I’ve mentioned before numerous times. Many others have written their own books based on the teachings of ACIM which later on, begot the likes of another somewhat controversial book series starting with The Secret by Rhonda Byrne in 2006. That tackles the Law of Attraction which I’ve also blogged about in reference to the many books written by Esther and Jerry Hicks. They do all have similar messages that will engage the reader towards a spiritually filled life by changing your outdated beliefs. You can also access some youtube videos by Marianne Williamson about ACIM through Hay House for an audio experience of some of the text. Despite your own feelings about the book, I do commend anyone for reading it in its entirety and of course those thinkers who want to share such diverse material. Times have changed for sure on all things relative to spirituality, new age thinking, channeled messages, and so forth but again it all comes down to what you want to learn and belief systems.
Like I always say, learn everyday however that works for you. Something may be your thing and it may not. You will never know until trying to find out what interests you. Maybe you’d only gravitate towards certain parts of the book and not pick it up again for months. Take those lessons and apply them. Maybe also you DO decide to read the whole thing without a timeline and just keep going. It is always your choice friends. Challenge yourself with a goal concerning the book everyday. That’s another idea. I think it sounds fascinating that Jesus spoke through her! Whether or not you believe this is entirely fine. There is no right or wrong way but just do your thing for the greater good. Make your intentions count because they truly can if you allow them to.
So, spirit friends, is this book on your “to-do” must read list? Let me know if any of you have read it and please share if so inclined! I usually don’t recommend books unless I’ve read them myself but this one is constantly brought up with many people I follow and people I actually have met. Sure, I’m intimidated too with its content so maybe the shorter version works best? I don’t know…. We can all use more guidance on topics worth exploring and need to learn so we evolve. After all, you are here reading my blog so I bet you’re kinda spiritual or you wouldn’t be a seeker, right? Let’s all stay in this together by growing, sharing, and learning in these great spiritual lives of ours!
P.S. Please do share any opinions on ACIM that you have, I would love to hear them!
