Have you ever had a time where you needed to make a decision based on 2 “roads” in a way? Well, this post is about that exactly and no metaphor as my story involves an actual road. First off though, I do hope all of you are well as we continue on these spiritual journeys together and feel free to connect and share some of yours(: This post came to me while remembering some old camping trips we used to take when I was a kid. It’s that time of year here and we used to always go close to when school would be starting. Why did we wait so long? Who knows but I know it stressed my Mom out as coming home meant right into school supply shopping but that’s how it was for years… Did any of you camp as kids or do you even now? I have never with my husband and kids but tent camping in the yard they have done. Some activities we do want to pass on to our kids but guess this wasn’t one of them. I have some fond memories but there are times when we want to expose our kids to different types of fun although my husband would’ve loved it.
This takes me back to a time when I was around 9 or 10 years old. Can’t remember which but we either had our old Dodge camper van or the new pop up one so that doesn’t really matter. It was early morning and my Dad was outside shaving. He had gotten a dish pan and propped up a mirror somehow to see. I was the only one who happened to be outside then for some reason. I saw all this to explore and asked him if I could take a walk by myself as I saw a path ahead a little ways off our campsite. He said sure but to be careful and not to wander too far away. I was very excited to go by myself without any adult supervision! There were some woods around but I didn’t touch anything along the way– can’t get poison ivy… It was very quiet but I knew my Dad was right on the other side if I was unsure about all this.
I loved exploring these cool woods as I walked along further down. I had heard a rooster so thought a farm was nearby and then also heard a dog barking from somewhere. There were sunflowers growing along a fence and I have always loved them. Dad grew them along our fence in the garden for years as I would feel so tiny standing next to them. I continued on and it was then that I saw a fork in the road. Uh-oh… which way should I go? I really didn’t know as they both seemed to continue on farther away from where I needed to be. One “fork” looked like it went around in a circle which could’ve taken me back to where I started. I really wasn’t sure. All of a sudden, I seemed scared and as much as I wanted to continue, I called for help. Dad was still nearby, right? What if he wasn’t or drove somewhere and nobody else could hear me? He did hear me and said to follow his voice which led me back safely to our site. I could’ve just turned around and gone back the direction I came but felt it necessary calling for help. Dad’s voice guided me back but I still wanted to see that farm. Maybe on a drive I might’ve seen some of it but no memory of ever doing that.
I told Dad how cool it was but did panic a little. After all, I was still pretty young and Dad would not have just left the area knowing I was out there. Here’s the metaphor part spirit friends…. Maybe this has not actually happened to you with a literal path as a fork in the road but we are faced with decisions all the time and often are confused as to the best way. Always know you are guided and that the Universe is with you. Whatever decision you make- it will get you where you need to be eventually. If that doesn’t seem right then lesson learned and you begin again. My Dad got me thru that fork just like our Creator gets us through whatever we are dealing with. It might not be the best “path” for us at the time and we have all these winding ways to go but eventually we will get there. Have faith, trust yourself, and ask for that guidance you need along the way.
I was a scared little girl in a way but now I am an adult. Guess what though? I still need guidance despite my actual age and ask for it all the time. Sure, I have free will and can make my own decisions but sometimes we are really torn after weighing so many pros and cons. It’s always in our best interest so even if you stray too far along one path, another will come and your confidence will increase. I know mine has so believe yours will too. I never did see that farm I wanted so badly to find but it’s a memory I will always treasure of seeking a path on my own at such a young age. I was impressed that introverted me even asked my Dad such a question and he let me. I wonder if he remembers? He does recall many details of all our camping trips so maybe he does!
I wish you all many paths in this life friends and whatever fork is in that road, find one and take it. No, I didn’t take either but needed to get back to family. Now, it’s different of course but we still need to get on a road and enjoy the journey. A wise person I know had always said how it’s the journey and not the destination so keep going on yours and see what forks lie ahead…
