Do you know what your purpose truly is? I bet this may sound kinda deep for some but I assure you, it is not. Ask yourself this question and without thinking, answer it. What would you say? This could be my typical answer: Well, my purpose is being a wife, mom, it used to be being a preschool teacher, now I like yoga, cooking, writing, reading, um– I dunno what else? Hmmm. O.K. that can sum up a little bit of myself sure. How would yours look? You’d list your role as a spouse, parent, co-worker, friend, or whatever else. If you have that 9 to 5 job, am sure that’s a huge part of it. Even if you don’t, think of all the other things you do everyday that will make up a list. As a mother– there are so many to list and I can go on for days! Also, you’d probably list all your hobbies or interests as those are important too. Let’s take this further…..
All that stuff is great and your list is always a little different than someone else’s. Your Purpose isn’t defined by all those things that represent your life. We are always searching for more when truly it is already inside us. Just LET IT OUT…. I’ll explain. Most are saying things like: “Once I have this job, then I’ll be happy.” Maybe also: ” When I make enough money, then I’ll start a family.” Your statement could include: “When I meet that special someone, things will turn around for me.” We all say things similar to those but we’re missing the whole point. I’m guilty of this too. You need to FEEL good about yourself first and then alignment happens. I mean really, just because you get that elusive job doesn’t mean your troubles are over. Sure, the money could be super but life will still give you ups and downs and that doesn’t change just because you’re making more money. You still need to live within your means of course.
Your purpose is your passion. Am sure you have many but perhaps they get side-tracked because we are constantly busy with the day-to day and we forget the little things that bring us joy. Spiritually speaking, our purpose really is to serve and be happy. That sounds complicated to some of you but it isn’t at all. Serving? What’s that all about anyway? I’ve mentioned before how that isn’t my thing too much. You know— being a server in a restaurant, hosting holidays all the time or things like that. Serving doesn’t need to involve those details and can work in a way that aligns for you. How about volunteering or donating items? Yep, that’s a type of service. Giving your time and energy to projects that interest you counts too. It doesn’t need to involve one thing. Happiness is already there waiting for you to claim it.
If you feel good going into something, you’ll get more out of it. I know there are those obligatory events or things we dread but if you can just find one positive aspect, it will guide you towards a better thought. What really LIGHTS you up? I bet you have ideas but are intimidated stating them. Why? Maybe because there is never enough time in a day or we over schedule. Us humans tend to take that approach. I’m going to switch my list up above and see if you notice the difference. First off though when you honestly think of your purpose, they could also be things that have always been in your life as a child but adult decisions gets in the way. We all need to make a living and can’t just run around all day! Sounds fun though…. It’s o.k. to remember what made you happy back then. The NEW list about finding my purpose is this: “My Purpose is to truly be me while inspiring others to do the same. By sharing my gifts with the world in my own way, that matters most. I’m passionate about learning or growing spiritually and want to educate any way I can. The things that light me up are my purpose like reading, writing, yoga, meditation, speaking about my experiences, and many others. By becoming mindful of my actions, they mean more. I am able to get into the right mindset first which guides my day. I look forward to those things because I’m passionate about them.” I can list more but hopefully, you get the idea. Yes, I am still the wife and mom but we all need identities separate from our roles.
Whatever you look forward to doing and get truly EXCITED about, follow that! Maybe it changes once in a while and variety is good. I’ll look at yoga for an example. When I started at a studio, I needed beginner’s and became a regular. I just did that because it was my start. I LOVED it and the routine. After a while, I branched out more into workshops, retreats, other types of movement, etc. Yes it was all still yoga but moving away from perhaps one studio and beginner’s. The same can be said of anything you do as well. Think about it. I love my workouts but change it up some so boredom doesn’t set in. Cooking is the same. For me, music works wonders for both of those passions of mine. They have become part of my purpose because I enjoy them and look forward to them everyday. It can be like that for you too even in a paying job. Think of things you NEVER tire of. I surely can. No matter how often you do them, the fire inside is always there.
So, to summarize just remember that your purpose isn’t defined by your “roles.” It is thinking beyond that. Please make time for your other activities as much as you can. Truly it will change your mindset and you’ll find that happiness. It isn’t something you look for since it already exists inside you. Those other passions of yours are your purpose, not the other way around. Your children are the same. They are not just defined by being your kid, a student, athlete, musician, or whatever. It’s the OTHER stuff that ignites them MORE too. I’m not saying those other aspects aren’t important at all but they don’t confine us to just one way of being or doing. Sure, we have to grow up but can still incorporate what guided us as children. I still LOVE swimming like I did in my childhood along with bike riding. So, no more excuses! They just will make you say: ” I can’t.” If you can’t, then you won’t. Just do it anyway whether or not it isn’t the same or you feel judged. That happiness inside you is saying: “YAY, welcome back. You have found your purpose!”
