Welcome to today’s post Spirit friends! I hope you are safe and well as it is almost July… This summer is moving too fast already as we are close to celebrating our Independence Day here in the U.S.A. I’d like to share a few Q and A’s today for any aspiring writers and ask you some questions along the way…
You may remember the 3 types of writing learned in school and perhaps you even practiced all of them. They are argumentive, informative, and narrative. I like to switch that up as more like this: persuasive, educate, and entertain. Which do you prefer? In school, we would have debates and you got assigned a “role” whether you agreed or not. Sometimes, in History class we even had a mock jury and you would get placed on a side to argue a defense or prosecution. Have you had this experience? It does help you gain perspective while questioning your own beliefs for sure. I do believe some of these topics can intersect as well. You may have a piece of writing that may educate others while being entertaining. Your style is yours but what if you don’t have one? So glad you are here as that is where this post is headed…
A question I get asked a lot is this: ” Why do you blog?” That answer can vary for everyone but for me, it truly does fit with my writing. I love influencing others while allowing them to access their own style or just become open to new topics. I blog because I enjoy the informal way of communicating on a new subject every week whether it’s spiritual or life-centered. The ideas come to me naturally and I want to share my experiences with like minded folks. Lots of people blog on a variety of subjects and for differing reasons. It isn’t time consuming like working on a novel and my intention is to make a difference which we all do.
It’s tough to find a style that fits for you and sometimes you just need to write without thinking too much about it. That is of course once you realize what you want to do. I try to have a mix of serious and humor since I believe both are necessary. That’s just me, that may not be you. I realize some topics are super serious and nothing funny will ever come from them. I thrive on lightheartedness since life is meant to be enjoyed. No, not funny all the time either but all of you regulars should know by now I’m all about balance. Once you find your Niche, ideas will flow. I did a post a while back on prompts for journaling so just think about what fills you with joy. What interests you the most? Go with that…
Here’s some questions for YOU: ” Why do you follow certain writers?” Do they have a business or product and services you love?” You can only answer those of course but for me, it was spiritual people in the beginning or finding those who have similar gifts as mine. I do have many bloggers that follow me and they write on a variety of topics including poetry, cooking, travel, world events, fitness, and many others. Some just like to blog without finding a specific group or just merely want followers. Again, it’s all up to you but I seek out those who are genuinely interested on my topics to form a common bond. I applaud anyone writing to have their voice, opinion, or style heard. Sometimes, we may become influenced by social media groups as they market in a way we aspire to. Yes, an established status helps but isn’t needed. If you want to write, just write and love what you do.
One of my requests with having a website was a blog page. I fought for that and didn’t have to pay extra! I had them combine a few items so I could stick to the 3 page deal. Without a blog, it was just the book and I wanted more. I am not selling extra products but then decided to offer spiritual services thru phone calls. It just evolved that way for me as my other blog is separate from this one. They BOTH still connect on a spiritual level but that one is just thru wordpress on its own. A blog isn’t that difficult getting set up but you have to really WANT it. It does take some time and commitment on your end but only you can decide if it’s worth it.
My cousin is a very successful novelist and enjoys pumping out a new book almost every year. That’s another question I would get asked: “Are you going to write another book?” I say not right now as it doesn’t interest me and I do know for sure the mistakes I made the first time. I would do things another way altogether and if the time is right, so be it. Never say never…. When you feel it, you know and realistically, I could probably have had a few sequels to Spirit and Belief by now… Most people and really in fact— ALL OF US have a book inside just waiting to get out! We all have stories of our lives but can decide how or even when to share if at all. I never set out to be a novelist or even have a New York Times bestseller. Nope, not for me. Yes, there is money with all that and really not much in blogging. You can make money blogging with ads and so forth but your content and reach has to skyrocket in order to be considered. If that’s what you want, try it! I just know that I will continue doing my blog the way it works for me and am grateful for all of you along for the ride.
So, what would you define as the essence of writing? Is it to educate, entertain, or persuade? Hmmm. It is difficult to answer but I do know for my writing, I will never try to convince someone to agree with me totally. This world is built on diversity and variety and if you disagree, that’s your right to do so. I can only guide you to embrace newer ways of thinking and then educate you to make the best decision based on your beliefs. Hopefully, you laugh a little on the way too. Whether you ever get anything published, just be happy with what and how you are doing it. You can set goals and then possibly achieve them and much more. My Dad has written poetry and short stories for years and is in a Library Writer’s Group. He may never get published but has found his group of like minded writers. I also had a great uncle who did get some writing published so guess it was just a matter of time before I caught up to my bloodline! Never would’ve guessed it would be Warrior’s passing that would ignite such a fire in my heart!
